OVERVIEW
COVID-19 was a weird time in general. People were cloistered in their homes and away from the wonders of theatre. Now it’s time to “show up and show out” to bring people back to the theatre. Amazing Theatre is looking for 2-3-minute monologues by local writers, however, we will accept national and international submissions. The Monologue Festival will be an in-person event that takes place on Saturday, June 11, and Sunday, June 12, 2022, starting at 2:00 p.m. at the historic Odd Fellows Lodge, 1308 Olney Sandy Spring Road, Sandy Spring, Maryland 20860.
The Monologue Festival’s theme focuses on the Coronavirus’ impact on families, friends, and/or one’s community, and it is titled “Coronavirus in the Rearview Mirror.” It is the intent of the Monologue Festival to provide a forum for people to experience joy and happiness as they see and hear acts of kindness, love, and joy during an incredibly stressful and tragic period in their lives. Therefore, artists are encouraged to submit retrospective, culturally specific, uplifting monologues of hope, humor, faith, and creativity during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Theatre has received partial support from the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County (AHCMC) to produce this event.
FESTIVAL GUIDELINES
Artists are expected to interpret the theme “Coronavirus in the Rearview Mirror,” creatively based on their inspiration and creativity. Please read the following guidelines and requirements carefully. Monologues not meeting the requirements will not be considered.
The application fee is five dollars ($5.00 US) and is nonrefundable.
The monologue should be between two and three minutes in length.
Only one (1) person can perform the monologue. This is not intended to mean that the performance is restricted to a story about only one person (i.e., there can be multiple characters.)
Artists who can arrange to cast and direct their work will be given extra consideration.
Artists may submit up two monologues, at $5.00 each, but if selected, only one will be presented.
Use 12-point, easy to read fonts, such as Arial Times, New Roman or Calibri.
For a three-minute monologue, your script should be approximately three pages and contain a beginning, middle, and end. Directors are encouraged to have plays thoroughly read and rehearsed for timing.
Submitting your monologue to the festival grants The AmaZing Theatre Company the right to produce your work in our annual festival and photograph and /or videotape it for archival purposes, if it is selected.
If your monologue is selected and you do not live in the area, the Theatre may accept a MP4 video to be used for the final presentation. Performances created on Zoom are acceptable.
There will be children in the audience; therefore, please do not include unnecessary profanity. Scripts with excessive offensive language are less likely to be selected.
If your monologue needs to be edited, you will be notified immediately and given an opportunity to collaborate with us or to withdraw your script.
If presenting in person, the monologue should have simple technical requirements. There will not be a set. We will only have about one minute in between performances to change sets, which may only include tables, folding chairs, and some cubes.
In the event of COVID-related closures or limitations, the festival reserves the right to offer an online screening in place of an in-person event.
The rules herein are subject to change without prior notice; however, we will make reasonable efforts to inform submitters of any changes. We do not guarantee and do not assume that such indication will be given.
It is your responsibility to visit the Theatre’s website (https://amazingtheatre.org) regularly in order to understand, comply, and be notified of any change in rules and guidelines.
